Gabriel's Feather

I find swans fascinating conceptually. They sort of have a finger ( or feather ) in many pies. They represent grace and beauty, they are linked to the soul and the otherworlds in folklore and they are celebrated as symbols of love and loyalty. They show up in fairytales countless times. They really are quite romantic aren’t they? But then, I see something stir beneath the placid waters - a darker side to these captivating creatures because I also feel like they represent vanity and the ugliness connected to it. For this smaller painting I wanted to explore the idea of confining the swan within the borders of the canvas like a box or trap, something I associate with vanity, trying to force ourselves into an impossible or painful shape.
