Vesper
I am very much attached to the fox. I suppose the connection is rooted to my name but it is also something in the creature itself. They seem to exist somewhere on the periphery of magic, too wild to inhabit our world permanently but clever, curious and charming enough to enjoy our affections in a way that makes me feel they are interlocutor's - able to speak to the wild world as well as the domestic human ;) They have always had a strong presence in my work.
“Our revels now are ended. These our actors,
As I foretold you, were all spirits, and
Are melted into air, into thin air;
And, like the baseless fabric of this vision,
The cloud-capp’d towers, the gorgeous palaces,
The solemn temples, the great globe itself,
Yea, all which it inherit, shall dissolve,
And, like this insubstantial pageant faded,
Leave not a rack behind. We are such stuff
As dreams are made on; and our little life
Is rounded with a sleep.”
William Shakespeare – The Tempest.
